"I have no wish to continue the work of the Spirits. Why would I want to serve the Spirits...When I can become as powerful as they are?"-Byrne

ByrneEdit

Byrne, also known as Staven, is a servant of Chancellor Cole's. Byrne is very powerful. The Spirits of Good's power could even rival Byrne's power. His power comes from his left hand, which is covered with an armor-like gauntlet. It acts similiar to a hookshot or clawshot from other games. Nearer to the end of the game, he realizes the error of his ways and becomes good. Anjean claims to have known him for over a hundred years before he became Cole's lackey. The common trait of tiny legs in proporsion to a Lokomo's body is not present on Byrne. He stands as tall as a Hylian and is never seen with the wheeled devices the rest of the Lokomos are on.

Byrne

Byrne's history is shrouded in mystery. All that we know is that he was born as a Lokomo and became an apprentice of Anjean. Byrne claims that he studied with her to gain the power of the Spirits that he worked for. However, the Spirits of Good never gave him the power that he thought he deserved, so left to work for the Demon King, Malladus.

Zelda, Link, and Alfonso, on their way to the Tower of Spirits, are stopped by Cole and Byrne. Alfonso fights with Byrne to protect the Princess, but Byrne easily defeats him with an unknown magic, which sends Alfonso flying on top of the train. Once Cole murders Zelda, Byrne is the one that carries her body away.

Later in the game, when Link and Zelda find the Fire Realm's Rail Map, Byrne appears before them. He tries to attack them when Anjean comes and stops him. She reveals that the two of them served the Spirits of Good in the past. Byrne claims he no longer wishes to serve the Spirits of Good. Anjean teleports Zelda and Link to the lobby of the Tower of Spirits before facing him herself.

Anjean and an unconsious Byrne return to the Spirit Train's Passenger Car, where she tells of the mysterious weapon: the Bow of Light . She says it is hidden underneath the Sand Temple. Anjean also believes that it may be the key to driving Malladus out of Zelda's body. Before heading to the Sand Temple, Zelda tells Anjean to keep Byrne safe, so that she might have "words with him" once he awakens. Unbeknownst to all, Byrne awakens and observes this.

Once Link and Zelda retrieve the Bow of Light, they return to the Tower of Spirits and recieve bad news. Anjean cannot find the Demon Train, as Cole and Malladus have hidden it well. Byrne realizes the error of his ways and tells them of an item he built called the Compass of Light. It had helped Cole and Byrne find the Demon Train, which had been hidden in the Dark Realm. Byrne also tells them that he had put it far beneath the Altar of the Demon King, so that no one would ever find it. He also thanks them for sparing his life.

Once Link retrieves the Compass, the four head to the Dark Realm. Anjean offers to help Link and Zelda in the battle, but Byrne interferes, saying that her wounds from their are still too fresh. After offering his own help, Link and Zelda ultimately decide that both of the Lokomos need rest.

When Malladus is forced out of Zelda's body, Zelda tries to get into into it, but finds that she simply passes through it. When Malladus tries to get to her, Byrne appears and creates a magical barrier to protect her. He tells her that she must concentrate on reclaiming the Power of the Spirits, and comments that he heard what Zelda said about wanting a "few words with him". Zelda then asks Tetra for her blessing and is finally able to enter her body again. However, Malladus then uses his own power and disentegrates Byrne. With much effort, Link and Zelda manage to completely defeat Malladus once he possesses Chancellor Cole. Zelda mourns for Byrne's death as the sky is turned back to normal, but Anjean appears and claims that Lokomos can never really die. Instead, they turn into Spirits and are reincarnated again after many years with no memories of any past lives. Anjean then pieces together Byrne's Spirit and returns to the heavens to be with her "old friend" Byrne and the other Lokomos.
